Getting to Lake Balaton
Lake Balaton (Hungarian: Balaton) lies in western Hungary and is comfortably reachable by car from Germany and Austria. From Munich it is around 700 km (approx. 7 hrs), from Vienna only 350 km (approx. 3.5 hrs), from Berlin about 1,000 km.
By car
The fastest route runs via the A8/A1 to Salzburg, continuing on the A1 to Vienna and over the Hungarian M1 towards Budapest. At the Székesfehérvár junction switch onto the M7 heading south – the main artery to the south shore (Siófok, Zamárdi, Balatonszemes). For the north shore (Balatonfüred, Tihany, Badacsony) take the Veszprém exit.
- Don't forget the vignette: Austria (10 days approx. €11.50) and Hungary (10 days approx. €16) – book online as an e-vignette.
- Fuel strategy: diesel is usually cheaper in Hungary, petrol often more expensive than in Austria – check before crossing the border.
- Peak times: Saturday morning is changeover day and the M7 can jam. Travelling Friday or Sunday evening is more relaxed.
By bus or train
Flixbus runs several times a week from Munich – Siófok. Rail travellers go via Vienna Central Station to Budapest and on with the Hungarian express train (MÁV) – 1.5 hrs to the lake.
By plane
Direct flights to Budapest with Lufthansa, Wizz Air or Ryanair – from Budapest airport approx. 1.5 hrs by hire car to the lake. The smaller Hévíz-Balaton airport (SOB) is served seasonally.
Best time to visit Balaton
Lake Balaton is a year-round destination but has clear seasons. With an average depth of 3 metres it warms up quickly – up to 26 °C in high summer.
- May & June: mild weather (20–25 °C), low crowds, affordable prices – ideal for hiking, cycling and wellness.
- July & August: peak season, water 24–26 °C, all lidos and events open – book early!
- September: insider tip – warm water, empty beaches, grape harvest in Badacsony.
- October–April: quiet off-season, perfect for the thermal spas in Hévíz and Bük.
With kids at Lake Balaton
Balaton is considered one of the most child-friendly lakes in Europe. The water shelves very gently, especially on the south shore – children can often wade hundreds of metres into the lake.

Hungary is very dog-friendly. To enter the country your dog needs an EU pet passport, a valid rabies vaccination and a microchip. A muzzle is required on public transport.

The Badacsony wine region on the north shore is famous for dry Olaszrizling and Kéknyelű. Cellar tours with a tasting straight from the winemaker often cost just €10–20.
